~ Real Leadership
through Real Experiences and a whole lot of FUN! ~
The Explainers are
a group of volunteers, ages 8 to18. The title Explainers was given
to
them because of the importance of their explanation
of how the Museum works. These museum ambassadors help the guests
understand the who, what, where and why of the exhibits. This youth
empowerment / leadership program explores the concepts and teachings
of how to lead and make effective decisions. This goal is achieved
through actual leadership experiences at the Museum. The youth work
closely with the UPCM staff members who serve as mentors. Some of
the duties the Explainers perform include:
- Working with visitors of the Museum to help others better understand
the exhibits.
- Helping parties run smoothly.
- Giving input on how to make exhibits better .
- Planing, implementing, greeting and hosting special events.
With Special training Explainers also:
- Work in the Dino Store
- Answer phones
- Help with animal maintenance, handling and care
The Explainers Program is conducted
at the U.P. Children's Museum seven days a week.
Special Events: Several times a
month the Explainers have the chance to participate in a special
activity. Often we go into the community and explore the behind the
scenes workings of local leaders or we discover an aspect of our community
we never knew existed. We also like to have Explainer
Socials, giving Explainers the chance to meet other Explainers they
may not know or work with.
Special Awards: Every three months
an Explainer who goes above and beyond the call of duty receives the
Explainer of the Quarter award. This award is granted to the hard
working youth volunteer at a Marquette City Commission meeting.
The event is televised and the mayor presents the award to the
Explainer. Before or afterwards the Explainer is treated to an ice cream
sundae.
How
to become an Explainer: The
first Friday of every month a training is conducted
at the Museum from 4-6 p.m. A mandatory parent
training takes place
from 5:30 to 6 p.m.
Please call the Museum at 226-3911 to reserve a spot
at the next training.
